16186 01 - Emission Recall. On certain vehicles equipped with a 1.8L engine (RPO LWE), cracking of ceramic components internal to the catalytic converter may occur as a result of higher than anticipated exhaust temperatures. If this occurs, the catalytic converter low efficiency diagnostic will set and the malfunction indicator lamp will illuminate. Dealers are to reprogram the engine control module with calibrations that prevent higher than expected exhaust temperatures. (service procedure revised)

On some vehicles, depending on driving habits, soot may build up on the engine?s NOx position 1 sensor and / or oxygen sensor, causing the vehicle Check Engine Indicator to illuminate. An earlier correction for this condition (Voluntary Emission Recall 15594) may, under certain driving conditions, inadvertently cause the vehicle Check Engine Indicator to illuminate.For vehicles that were not serviced under previous recall 15594, dealers are to replace the NOx position 1 sensor and reprogram the engine control module with a modified calibration, and initiate a Diesel Particulate Filter cleaning cycle. Technician should inspect the PVC orifice for leaking oil or drawing a vacuum at idle. If the PCV orifice external port is leaking oil or vacuum, replace the camshaft cover assembly. Technician will inspect for a missing intake manifold Non Return Valve that may have damaged the PCV orifice diaphragm. Check for the return valve if it is not visible use a long cotton swab to wipe any excess oil from the valve to validate. If the non return valve is still not visible, then intake manifold removal for inspection is required to validate. When the valve is present reinstall the intake manifold. When the valve is not present replace the intake manifold assembly.

For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after November 17, 2016, are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to November 17, 2016, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider. Correction Dealers are to replace the DEF tank reservoir. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Diagnostic Trouble Code B101D stored in Telematics Communication Interface Control Module. Technician will use Global Diagnostic System 2 to review the Firmware Over-the-Air version. If the Firmware Over-the-Air version on the scan tool equals 6708 the technician will need to contact General Motors Technical Assistance Center for further assistance. If the Firmware Over-the-Air version on the scan tool is lower than 6708 Dealer can order the part thought the Instrument Sales and Service website process.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that may have a hard start, no start, rough running, or low fuel pressure. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0087, P0088, P0191 and P128E during the inspection. If during the inspection of the fuel system contamination is found the complete fuel system will need to be cleaned and flushed. After the fuel system is cleaned out test the fuel using the latest version of PIT3173.
