A dual-pulse injection strategy is utilized during engine cold start to reduce the time required to bring the catalytic converter up to operating temperature. This split injection strategy lasts for about 60 seconds on cold start. This process may cause the customer to see increased black smoke during cold start and should be considered normal.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician of a complaint of a sag or hesitation when accelerating. The concern is present when coasting at low speeds of less than 15 miles per hour and then aggressively applying the throttle, or after making a hard stop followed by an aggressive throttle. This is considered normal operation of the vehicle the throttle is delayed and opened slowly up to .7 seconds to help minimize driveline lash and clunking or will have approximately .5 seconds of zero torque to allow the transmission to shift to first gear.

This information was created to inform the technician that the 2-3 upshift and the 3-2 downshift clunk is caused by the releasing of the 2-4 band and application of the 3-4 clutch assembly during an upshift. Also during a 3-2 downshift, the releasing of the 3-4 clutch during the application of the 2-4 band, can cause torque reversal down the output shaft creating a clunk. This is a normal condition.

Steering Wheel Radio Controls Erratic Operation Condition/Concern Some customers may comment that when changing radio presets up on the steering wheel controls, then adjusting the volume down/up, then proceeding to change the radio presets up, the next preset actually goes down. This only occurs when making a volume change in between changing radio presets. This may be caused by a software anomaly. Recommendation/Instructions An updated software calibration has been released to address the above conditions.

Water on Front Compartment Floor and/or Musty Odor Condition/Concern Important: On vehicles built before VIN # D0142531, ensure the HVAC After-Blow function has been enabled. See the latest version of PIC5730 for instructions. Some customers may comment that, after running the air conditioner (A/C), water is noticed on the floor or in extreme cases a musty odor may be detected in the vehicle. This could be caused by a mis-positioned HVAC drain assembly in the floor. Mobile Telephone Microphone Poor Performance Condition/Concern Some customers may comment when using the Bluetooth® phone system in their vehicle, the person on the receiving end of a mobile telephone call states the audio sounds muffled, distorted or has static. The foam patch on the back of the headliner at the microphone mounting area may have come loose. This foam is a sound barrier for the back side of the microphone. If the patch is detached, it allows unwanted noise to interfere with the microphone operation when making a phone call.

Technician will find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0011 and or P0014. Technician will need to remove the camshaft solenoids and inspect the screens for debris. Technician will need to clean off the screens with brake cleaner if debris is present. If code resets or the screen did not have debris on them, remove the camshaft actuator associated with the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and with light air pressure, blow out the oil passages through the camshaft actuator solenoid port. Lubricate the camshaft solenoid seal(s) with clean engine oil and reinstall and install a new camshaft actuator associated with the Diagnostic Trouble Code.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician with information regarding high misfire rates always on #1 cylinder. A customer may complain of misfires or roughness on cold start up with a P0300 diagnostic trouble code. Technician is to add coolant dye to the system and run the engine through warm up to circulate the dye. Pressurize the cooling system after a cold soak and inspect the cylinder with a bore scope for coolant dye. Dye is used to identify coolant over residual fuel being that might be left in the cylinder. The technician is not to replace the cylinder head as it will not correct this concern. In some cases it is necessary to remove the head for inspection. Do not replace the engine for small surface pock marks or a pitting appearance this is normal and do not connect to coolant passages. Usually if porosity is present there will be a break in the carbon ring. Only replace the engine if true porosity is found. Technician is to call Product Quality Center with the latest version of bulletin 02-07-30-029 if porosity is found and engine replacement is required.
