This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicle starts and stalls on the first initial start after the replacement of the Theft Deterrent Module. Technician will need to use the scan tool to check Manufactures Enable Counter. If the number is anything other than zero the Manufactures Enable Counter will need to be reset. To reset the Manufactures Enable Counter counter, the ignition key can be cycled the number equal to the Manufactures Enable Counter counter.

The monitor calculates the percent of oil life remaining, based on 3 pathways. The first pathway for oil life calculation is engine revolutions. The second pathway for oil life calculation is the mileage form the last rest for all General Motors powertrains except the Volt. The third pathway for oil life calculation is the amount of time the oil is in the engine. The Volt uses a 2 year timer instead of 1 year. It also uses the engine revolution counter. It does not use the mileage pathway to count down.

Technician may also find a Diagnostic Trouble Code P0521 in the Engine Control Module. Technician should follow all published Service Information diagnosis. When using a scan tool if the oil pressure is low but the oil pressure at the oil filter housing is correct, technician should inspect the Valve Lifter Oil Filter for debris/sludge that could be restricting oil flow to the oil pressure sensor. Technician should remove the Valve Lifter Oil Filter and clean it. If the Valve Lifter Oil Filter cannot be cleaned replace it.

Technician will need to complete the current Service Information diagnostic for any current Diagnostic Trouble Codes or symptoms found. If an Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor message is displayed with a specific Diagnostic Trouble Code, use that specific Service Information diagnostic, and repair the vehicle as necessary. If the dealer has found an Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor message with no Diagnostic Trouble Code, diagnose the condition using the current Service Information diagnosis for Diagnostic Trouble Code P20EE / P207F (P2BAD for 2012 and newer model years). After making repairs use the Service Information Document titled "Reductant Fluid Quality Test (With or without Diagnostic Trouble Codess)" to evaluate and clear the Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor Driver Information Center message.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on the steps to diagnose and repair vehicles that may have a no crank concern. Technician will need to check the valve train for movement when the engine is cranked. If the valve train is not moving while the crankshaft is moving the front cover will need to be removed to inspect for a sheared cam sprocket locator pin. If the cam sprocket locator pin has sheared, replace the engine assembly. If the valve train is rotating during inspection, disconnect the Camshaft Position sensor and check if the engine will start. If the engine starts front cover will need to be removed to inspect for a sheared cam sprocket locator pin. If the cam sprocket locator pin has sheared, replace the engine assembly. If the engine does not start with the Camshaft Position sensor disconnected the follow published ?Engine Cranks But Does Not Run? diagnosis in Service Information. Also perform an Engine Compression Test and Cylinder Leakage Test in Service Information documents all results. If the Service Information procedures above isolate an engine mechanical concern then removed to inspect for a sheared cam sprocket locator pin. If the cam sprocket locator pin has sheared, replace the engine assembly.

IF THE RUNNING COMPRESSION OF THE MISFIRING CYLINDER STAYS BELOW 25 POUNDS PER SQUARE INCH REGARDLESS OF THE ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT SOLENOID BEING COMMANDED ON OR OFF, AN ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT LIFTER IS MECHANICALLY COLLAPSED/STUCK OR UNLOCKING AS SOON AS THE ENGINE IS STARTED. REPLACE ALL ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT LIFTERS, AND ALL PLASTIC LIFTER GUIDES. ALSO PERFORM THE CYLINDER DEACTIVATION ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT VALVE LIFTER OIL MANIFOLD DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING IN SERVICE INFORMATION. IF IT ISOLATES A CONCERN WITH THE VALVE LIFTER OIL MANIFOLD, REPLACE IT AND REEVALUATE THE CONCERN. THE ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT LIFTERS CAN ALSO BE MONITORED FOR PROPER OPERATION BY CAREFULLY INSPECTING THE CYLINDER 1, 4, 6, AND 7 ROCKERS AND VALVES WHILE CRANKING OR BRIEFLY AND SAFELY RUNNING THE ENGINE WITH THE VALVE COVERS REMOVED. IF THE VALVE OR VALVES OF AN ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT CYLINDER STOP MOVING WHILE DOING THIS TEST, THE ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT LIFTER IS CAUSING THE CONCERN. FOR 2008-2009 FULL SIZE TRUCK/SUV OR A 2007-2009 CHEVROLET TAHOE WITH THE POLICE PACKAGE REPROGRAM THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. Technician should first access the rear of the inner wheelhouse area through the tail lamp cavity and the front of the wheelhouse from under the vehicle, and coat the inner hem of the wheel house to side outer panel with 3M Rust Fighter I. After allowing the 3M Rust Fighter I to dry then apply several coats of Nox Rust X-121B undercoating Part number 12346501.

Technician will need to measure fender wheel-opening heights, front and rear, to quantify vehicle lean. Fender wheel-opening heights are related to, but distinct from, trim height. The front wheel-opening height is known as P height, and the rear wheel-opening height is known as R height. Adjust and heights that are out of specification. After all adjustments are done, perform a front-end alignment and check headlight aim.
