Some customers may complain about a poor acceleration and rough idling or the CHECK ENGINE light ON with DTC P030X:00 (only turbo engines are applicable; non-turbo engines are NOT applicable). - In most cases, P030X is stored, but sometimes not. - Sometimes the CHECK ENGINE light does not recognize this engine concern. This is caused by the variable valve in the exhaust manifold seizing and causing the exhaust port to become hot and the exhaust valve seat to wear unevenly, resulting in compression leakage. To eliminate this concern, the design of the exhaust manifold has been modified.

NHTSA source summary · Original PDF not reviewed by Recallfolio

Front Brake Noise Symptom 1: Some vehicles may exhibit a click noise when first moving forward or reverse from a stop OR when first applying the brakes while moving forward at slow speeds. This is caused by deteriorated grease between the brake pads and the shim, the front brake pads move upward/downward along with the brake rotors during brake application. When the vehicle moves or the brakes are applied the next time, the front brake pads move to the other side, which causes a click noise. Front Brake Noise Symptom 2: Some vehicles may exhibit the brakes having an unusual noise or vibration when applying the brake. This is caused by rust on the brake disc plate’s surface. Rear Brake Noise Symptom 1: Some vehicles may exhibit grooves in rear brake disc plate(s). This concern is mostly found on new or low mileage vehicles, when the brakes are new. The grooves may be caused through abrasion from the accumulation of metal particles from the rear brake disc plates. The metal particles get caught between the brake pads and disc plates causing groove damage. To eliminate this concern, the disc plate surface honing process has been changed to reduce metal particle formation. Rear Brake Noise Symptom 2: Some vehicles equipped with an electric parking brake (EPB) may exhibit a grinding noise from the rear brakes when braking. This may be caused by the rear brake pads not having the capability to remove the rust from the rear brake discs. This is caused by rust on the brake disc plate’s surface. NOTE: The red rust accumulated on the discs is exposed to high temperatures during braking, and consequently the rust turns black. As the black rust is too hard to be removed by the brake pads, the rust progress is accelerated, resulting in the grinding noise.

If you encounter any type of electrical concern (e.g, dead battery, engine no start, DTC(s) stored...), interview the customer before proceeding with normal MGSS diagnosis by asking if any aftermarket devices have been installed. Aftermarket devices may be the cause of the electrical concern. Below are a few examples of unusual electrical concerns caused by aftermarket devices. Examples: 1. Devices connected to the DLC-2 (battery discharge/DTC stored) 2. Cell phone charger/accessory in 12V socket (engine no start or unable to turn off) 3. GPS tracking device (engine no start/battery discharge) 4. Dash cam (DTC stored) 5. Non-certified USB cable (Apple Carplay™/ Android Auto™ will not connect) 6. Over-sized wheels/tires (incorrect GPS location)

Some customers may complain about poor A/C performance due to low refrigerant. This may be caused by one of two things. Cause 1: [For 2016-2022 CX-9 with VINS lower than JM3TC******617612 (produced before April 7, 2022)] The condenser is corroded causing leakage of the A/C refrigerant. To eliminate this concern, the anti-corrosion performance of the condenser tube has been improved. Cause 2: [For all 2016-2022 CX-9] The low-temperature side outlet pipe leading to the evaporator of the air conditioner condenser has deteriorated because the structure around the outlet pipe on the low-temperature side of the air conditioner condenser allows mud and salt water to adhere easily. There is no mass production change, but an improved condenser was designed as needed.

Some customers may experience a squeaking noise may be heard from the exhaust manifold when the idle speed drops from fast idle to normal idle speed during cold start. This is caused by a variable valve being stuck in the closed position. When returning from fast idle to normal, the stuck valve suddenly opens due to thermal change around it which causes abnormal noise. To eliminate this concern, the internal design of the exhaust manifold has been modified.

Some vehicles may have coolant leaks at the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold (as shown below). There may be cracks at the stud bolt hole or at the outside of the exhaust manifold. Cracks may be caused by: - Deformation of the exhaust manifold during usage causing unexpected force to certain areas of the cylinder head. - Residual stress generated during production in the cylinder head material may be greater than expected. The external force from the exhaust system when driving over bumps may cause unexpected force to certain areas of the cylinder head. To eliminate this concern, the design of the exhaust manifold gasket and the cylinder head has been modified to reduce the force on the cylinder head.

Some vehicles may have coolant leaks at the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold (as shown below). There may be cracks at the stud bolt hole (1) or at the outside of the exhaust manifold (2). Cracks may be caused by: Deformation of the exhaust manifold during usage causing unexpected force to certain areas of the cylinder head. Residual stress generated during production in the cylinder head material may be greater than expected. The external force from the exhaust system when driving over bumps may cause unexpected force to certain areas of the cylinder head. To eliminate this concern, the design of the exhaust manifold gasket and the cylinder head has been modified to reduce the force on the cylinder head.

Some vehicles equipped with electric parking brake (EPB) may exhibit a grinding noise from the rear brakes when braking. This may be caused by the rear brake pads not having the capability to remove the rust from the rear brake discs. The red rust accumulated on the discs is exposed to high temperatures during braking, and consequently the rust turns black. As the black rust is too hard to be removed by the brake pads, the rust progress is accelerated, resulting in the grinding noise.

A musty/mildew type odor may come from the vents when the air conditioning (A/C) system is operating. It is most noticeable when the A/C is first turned ON. This odor is the result of mold growth in the A/C evaporator/cooling unit which is caused by condensation, dust, and pollen within the cooling unit. This condition is usually worse during high humidity conditions. “Mazda Air Cooling Coil Coating” is available to encapsulate the mold to reduce odors. If the product is properly applied, it can effectively reduce the musty/mildew odor for up to three years.
