After the technician has performed the repairs for the Diagnostic Trouble Code found during inspection, technician will find that the Diagnostic Trouble Code will not clear. Technician will need to use Pico Oscilloscope Diagnostic Kit to effectively diagnosis vehicles. Technician should drive the vehicle will using the Pico Oscilloscope to record data. After the data is recorded it should be reviewed to determine the root cause of the concern. If a repair attempt made the concern better but not eliminated or had no affect at all, and are requesting assistance from General Motors Technical Assistance Center record another Pico file and save it to the computer. After the new Pico Oscilloscope data has been saved email the data to General Motors Technical Assistance Center in the subject line include ?Vibration? ?Business Associate Code? and the last 8 of the Vehicle Identification Number.

On certain 2003-2015 model year Chevrolet Express, 2003-2007 Chevrolet Silverado, 2008-2013 Chevrolet Silverado HD, 2003-2015 GMC Savana, 2003-2007 GMC Sierra 3500, and 2007-2012 GMC Sierra HD model vehicles equipped with a Duramax diesel engine and an engine-block heater (RPO YF2 and K05), continuously activating the engine-block heater through Ambulance body up fit ?shore power? may cause excessive heat buildup, cause a high-resistance short, damage the engine-block heater, or, in rare cases, melt electrical connections or cause an engine-compartment fire. Dealers are to: Replace block heater element with a revised heater equipped with EPDM O-Rings, shorter bolt and improved torque & angle. Disconnect the coolant heater from being powered whenever ?shore power? is plugged in. Add a label to the current cord, ?Avoid continuous use, for Cold Start Only?, unless the cord is damaged at either end, then replace the original cord. Provide the customer with an Owner?s Manual Insert found at the end of this bulletin.

The concern is present when coasting at low speeds of less than 15 miles per hour and then aggressively applying the throttle, or after making a hard stop followed by an aggressive throttle. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a lack of power on initial acceleration from a stop when the ambient temperature is approximately 103 Fahrenheit or greater and may include engine detonation or pre-ignition type events as temperatures approach 120 Fahrenheit. Technician will need to perform published Service Information diagnosis first. If Service Information diagnosis does not isolate the cause of this concern, take a Tech 2 snapshot of the concern happening and note the Spark Parameter in the Ignition Data List. If it drops near/below 0 degrees during the concern, check if there is a cylinder that shows any knock. If there is a knock in any cylinder perform a top engine clean. If the concern is still present, then switching to premium fuel (91 octane or higher) with detergents (Top tier fuel) when ambient temperatures exceed 110 Fahrenheit degrees, this should provide a slight improvement in engine performance when ambient temperatures are high especially as temperatures approach 120 Fahrenheit degrees.

If the current Service Information diagnostic has led to Fuel Injection Pump replacement, Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 must be inspected for magnetic metal debris. If there is a questionable amount of magnetic debris found on Pressure Regulator 1 remove the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and/or Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 to inspect for magnetic metal debris. If technician will need to replace all of the parts listed under the latest version of PIP4949 found in the Service Forms section of Global Connect if debris is found. Clean and flush all fuel chassis lines, filter pipes, and other engine mounted fuel system pipes not replaced. Also the fuel filter housing must be cleaned with a new fuel filter installed. Then the fuel tank and fuel sender must be cleaned and flushed.

This Preliminary Information communication provides additional information to the technician when replacing the Duramax Diesel head gasket. This is a supplement to procedure found in Service Information. The left and right cylinder head gaskets are not interchangeable and will block oil and coolant passages if installed incorrectly resulting in severe damage to the engine. Technician is not use any power sanding devices, wire brush or wheel as well as any chemical cleaning agents to clean the gasket surface. Leave the gaskets in the package until the surfaces are ready to install them. Do not set the gaskets on workbenches or tool boxes to avoid introduction of foreign debris. The cylinder head surface is not to be machined measure the head for warpage with a straight edge and feeler gauge replacing the head with warpage in excess of .1 millimeter. All M12 head bolts must be replaced however the M8 bolts can be reused. Install 2 head bolts secured at minimal torque to minimize the chance of introducing foreign material. Use a paint pen on the M12 bolts marking the head of each bolt indicating which of the 4 torque steps have been completed to prevent missing a step or doing a step twice.

Before any in-depth diagnostics are performed, be aware that various issues could occur if the vehicle has been modified and inform the customer the conditions noted may not be covered under warranty. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicle starts and stalls on the first initial start after the replacement of the Theft Deterrent Module. Technician will need to use the scan tool to check Manufactures Enable Counter. If the number is anything other than zero the Manufactures Enable Counter will need to be reset. To reset the Manufactures Enable Counter counter, the ignition key can be cycled the number equal to the Manufactures Enable Counter counter.

This Preliminary Information communication advises the technician about the calculation and operation of the engine oil life monitor. The monitor calculates the percent of oil life remaining, based on 3 pathways. The first pathway for oil life calculation is engine revolutions. The second pathway for oil life calculation is the mileage form the last rest for all General Motors powertrains except the Volt. The third pathway for oil life calculation is the amount of time the oil is in the engine. The Volt uses a 2 year timer instead of 1 year. It also uses the engine revolution counter. It does not use the mileage pathway to count down.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that may have low oil pressure message. Technician may also find a Diagnostic Trouble Code P0521 in the Engine Control Module. Technician should follow all published Service Information diagnosis. When using a scan tool if the oil pressure is low but the oil pressure at the oil filter housing is correct, technician should inspect the Valve Lifter Oil Filter for debris/sludge that could be restricting oil flow to the oil pressure sensor. Technician should remove the Valve Lifter Oil Filter and clean it. If the Valve Lifter Oil Filter cannot be cleaned replace it.
