This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have an OnStar system that will not power up. Technician should turn off the ignition and cancel retained accessory power. After the vehicle has powered down, remove power to the OnStar module for five minutes. After the power has been removed for five minutes, if the OnStar system is working release the vehicle. If the OnStar system is still inoperative continue with published Service Information diagnostics.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that during battery parasitic drain test, there may be some confusion as to what the normal power consumption reading should be from the OnStar system. Technician should understand the power cycles of the various OnStar systems. All Generation 6, 7, 8, and 9 systems are powered up continuously for 48 hours from ignition off. After 120 hours from ignition off, these systems then completely power off. The Onstar modules draw: * IGN ON - 240 to 400 Milliamp. * IGN OFF - 3 to 20 Milliamp for 48 hours or 120 hours on Gen 9 and vehicle communication platforms. * IGN OFF - 0.2 to 0.8 Milliamp after 48 hours or 120 hours on Gen 9 and vehicle communication platforms.

IF THE DRIVER IGNORES THE RED BATTERY LIGHT AND CONTINUES TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, THE STORED BATTERY CHARGE WILL EVENTUALLY BE DEPLETED AND THE CUSTOMER WILL NOT BE ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE. Technician will need to use Global Diagnostic System 2 and check the Instrument Panel Cluster for Diagnostic Trouble Codes. If Diagnostic Trouble Code B0158 Outside Air Temperature Display Malfunction is set, check that the outside ambient temperature sensor is connected check the integrity of circuits 61 and 636 from sensor to the Instrument Panel Cluster.

Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P00B7 or P2181 may be set in the Engine Control Module. Technician will need to check the water outlet for plastic flashing and/or debris by remove the water outlet attached to the rear of the cylinder head. Technician will need clean or replace the water outlet as needed.

Technician should be advised Windshield reduces Ultraviolet rays down to 4% or less. Front side door glass reduces Ultraviolet rays down to 35% or less. Windshields are SOLAR glass with a light transmittance of >/=70%. Front door glass are Solar glass with a light transmission of >/=70%. Rear door glass, quarter windows and back windows can use either Solar glass (>/=70%) or Privacy glass, which has a light transmittance of 20%.

This Preliminary Information communication advises the technician to insure that global diagnostic service 2 diagnostic packages are up to date prior to learning the steering angle sensor for a diagnostic trouble code C710 symptom code 71 set in the electronic brake control module or the power steering control module. When rechecking for diagnostic trouble codes a U0074 U0077, U0180D, U01293, U0126, U0125, C0186, C0196, or C0287 are set and will not clear diagnose the Chassis bus. If no fault is found in the chassis bus check for an multiple diagnostic interface to data link connector issue. Technician is to try a different multiple diagnostic interface cable and attempt the steering angle sensor learn again following service information instruction then try to clear the codes again.
