This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that may have a Malfunction Indicator Lamp on. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P01285 and or P0171. Technician will need to use published Service Information diagnostics first. Technician will update the Engine Control Module with the latest calibration in Tis-2-Web if published Service Information diagnostics do not resolve the concern. If the calibration did not repair the concern inspect the engine for oil leaks and insure the oil fill cap is properly closed. Technician will also use the CH-44175-1 handheld tester to test the ethanol content of the fuel. Technician should also inspect for unmetered air/vacuum leaks by using the Evaporative Emissions System smoke machine to induce smoke into the engine, exhaust, and air intake system as outlined in the latest version of PIP4925. Technician should inspect the air filter condition to ensure that it is a factory filter and that none of the pleats are damaged and the inside of the air cleaner opening before the Mass Air Flow sensor for any sign of casting flash. If the concern is currently happening while at a hot idle, plug all vacuum lines.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on how to diagnose and repair vehicles that may have an OnStar Turn-By-Turn Navigation the system that is inoperative. Technician verifies there are no Diagnostic Trouble Codes are present in the Antilock Braking System and Vehicle Communication Interface Module of the vehicle. If no Diagnostic Trouble Codes found call OnStar using the Blue button on the OnStar key pad and ask the advisor for a turn by turn route. Also make a OnStar personal call and a call into the vehicle. If normal diagnostics do not lead to a resolution technician will need to call General Motors Technical Assistance Center for further assistance.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that during battery parasitic drain test, there may be some confusion as to what the normal power consumption reading should be from the OnStar system. Technician should understand the power cycles of the various OnStar systems. All Generation 6, 7, 8, and 9 systems are powered up continuously for 48 hours from ignition off. After 120 hours from ignition off, these systems then completely power off. The Onstar modules draw: * IGN ON - 240 to 400 Milliamp. * IGN OFF - 3 to 20 Milliamp for 48 hours or 120 hours on Gen 9 and vehicle communication platforms. * IGN OFF - 0.2 to 0.8 Milliamp after 48 hours or 120 hours on Gen 9 and vehicle communication platforms.

Technician should be advised Windshield reduces Ultraviolet rays down to 4% or less. Front side door glass reduces Ultraviolet rays down to 35% or less. Windshields are SOLAR glass with a light transmittance of >/=70%. Front door glass are Solar glass with a light transmission of >/=70%. This Preliminary Information communication advises the technician to insure that global diagnostic service 2 diagnostic packages are up to date prior to learning the steering angle sensor for a diagnostic trouble code C710 symptom code 71 set in the electronic brake control module or the power steering control module. When rechecking for diagnostic trouble codes a U0074 U0077, U0180D, U01293, U0126, U0125, C0186, C0196, or C0287 are set and will not clear diagnose the Chassis bus. If no fault is found in the chassis bus check for an multiple diagnostic interface to data link connector issue. Technician is to try a different multiple diagnostic interface cable and attempt the steering angle sensor learn again following service information instruction then try to clear the codes again.
