Update Bulletin

NHTSA communication ID: 10125730

NHTSA source summary · Original PDF not reviewed by Recallfolio

UPDATE Technical Bulletin (ECM programming issues) Current ECM programming may cause poor engine idle quality while the air conditioning compressor is activated. If vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, TCM must be reprogrammed along with the ECM. If vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, only ECM programming is required. Current ECM programming may be causing slight hesitation related concerns on vehicles equipped with 2.0 liter CBPA engines (depending on driving conditions). The production solution to this issue was optimized software to enhance engine idle quality while the air conditioning compressor is activated. Improved ECM/TCM software was also introduced to address drivability concerns and slight hesitation complaints.

Technical Bulletin (Oil Consumption Measurement): Customer states oil consumption is higher than the Volkswagen oil consumption standard of up to 0.5 quarts per 600 miles, or 0.5 liters per 1000 km. In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified break-in periods consume more oil during the break-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the break-in period. This document informs of oil consumption tests to check a vehicles performance.

Service Action Campaign (Certain 2009-2012 Model Year Vehicles with TDI Clean Diesel Engine Install Misfueling Guard): As diesel engine passenger vehicles become more popular, auto manufacturers have seen an increase in the number of misfueling cases where diesel engine vehicles are mistakenly fueled with gasoline. The resulting fuel system contamination can lead to costly repairs that are not covered under warranty. The corrective action taken for this issue was installing a misfueling guard in the fuel filler neck of vehicles.

VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP COMMUNICATION (Service Action 20T8 Install Misfueling Guard): Volkswagen has received feedback from some vehicle owners in localized areas who have concerns about their ability to refuel their vehicle after the 20T8 Service Action was performed. A few customers have advised that they are unable to fuel their vehicle at their preferred fueling stations or that it now takes a very long time to refuel. Volkswagen believes the root cause is attributed to damage and/or variances in diesel fuel nozzles found at fueling stations. At this time, Volkswagen has no evidence to conclude that there is any problem with the misfueling guard. Dealers should continue performing Service Action 20T8 on vehicles that show the code open in ElsaWeb. In discussing this action with customers, Volkswagen encourages to utilize the talking points in this document.

Technical Bulletin (Update Programming of ECM for Concerns of a Bump Sensation after Coming to a Stop): Current ECM programming may cause a bump after coming to a stop, which may be felt through the chassis of the vehicle. This concern is caused by the engine torque being slightly high when the transmission goes into Neutral Control. Neutral Control is designed to reduce load on the engine during idle, in order to decrease emissions. The production solution to this issue was improved software for smoother stopping.

Technical Bulletin (Cylinder Glow Plug issues): During the initial glow phase, after switching the ignition "On", the ECM performs a check of the glow plugs through the glow plug control module, to ensure the correct glow plugs are installed. If the engine is cranked during this check, lowering the system voltage, the ECM may receive an incorrect reading and set incorrect glow plug faults. A production solution is already being implemented for this issue. This document discusses the "Fault Codes" necessary to diagnosis, and potential remedy of the issue.
