This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that may have "Exhaust Fluid Low", "Exhaust Fluid Empty - Refill Now", "Exhaust Fluid Range: XXX" or "Service Exhaust Fluid - See Owners Now" on the Driver Information Center. If the technician is working on 2010 and 2011 model years campaign 11001 has now been released. Other vehicles technician will need to check the Body Control Module and the scan tool to insure the latest calibration are installed in both. Then use the scan tool to check Reductant System Data in the Engine Control Module. Ensure that all three diesel exhaust fluid level sensors are active with the diesel exhaust fluid tank level showing 100%. If the tank level is below 100% add up to 2 gallons of diesel exhaust fluid. After adding the fluid, use a scan tool to reset the reductant fluid tank level. When the reductant level warning shows "none" the diesel exhaust fluid system reset and reprogram is complete.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician only to provide additional tips when diagnosing a front heated seat concern and is not meant to be a diagnostic flow chart or replace Service Information. Always, perform and refer to Service Information for the latest diagnostic information and procedures. Trucks equipped with heated and cooled seats Regular Production Option Code (KB6), may comment on any of the following front heated seat concerns. Condition 1, a front heated seat (back and/or cushion) is inoperative. Technician should diagnosis each affected seat heater individually. Technician should test all four circuits Power, Ground, Control (from Body Control Module) and Heating Element Supply Power. The Power, Ground, Control (from Body Control Module) can easily be checked by starting the engine and turn on the cooled seat. When the cooled seats are turned on the blower in each seat back and cushion will turn on at that point technician will be able to hear the blower moving. The heating element supply power circuit can be test by disconnecting the affected heating element and connect a voltmeter across the heating element supply power and ground circuit. Then start the engine and turn on the heated seat, the blower will supply system voltage on the element supply power circuit for 1 to 2 seconds. With the heated seat element disconnected, use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance of the heating element. If all of the above steps check ok or the heating element resistance is close to the approximate spec, reconnect all disconnected connectors. Connect a voltmeter across the affected heated seat element connectors supply power and ground circuits back probing the connector. Then check the resistance of the heating element. The resistance should be close to the same resistance as when testing with the connector unplugged. Now check the voltage with the engine running and the heated sets on high. Technician will need to measure the actual truck and trailer weights, with the trailer loaded to the point that exhibits the condition. If any weight parameter is exceeded such as the Front Gross Axle Weight Rating, Rear Gross Axle Weight Rating, Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or Gross Combined Weight Rating the load must be reduced before investigating further. If evaluation of the trailer?s brakes indicates trailer brake capability is adequate, adjust brake controller per the Trailer Gain Adjustment Procedure described in the Driving and Operating section of the Owner?s Manual and evaluate truck and trailer combination for braking shudder.

Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code DTCs P0087, P0088, P0191 or P128E. Technician will need to follow all Service Information diagnose for the Diagnostic Trouble Code. If the current Service Information diagnostic has led to Fuel Injection Pump replacement, Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 must be inspected for magnetic metal debris. If there is a questionable amount of magnetic debris found on Pressure Regulator 1 remove the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and/or Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 to inspect for magnetic metal debris. If technician will need to replace all of the parts listed under the latest version of PIP4949 found in the Service Forms section of Global Connect if debris is found. Clean and flush all fuel chassis lines, filter pipes, and other engine mounted fuel system pipes not replaced. Also the fuel filter housing must be cleaned with a new fuel filter installed. Then the fuel tank and fuel sender must be cleaned and flushed.

This concern will only occur when the temperatures is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and if the blower motor is removed while still cold, ice may be found on the blower motor cage. This concern could be caused by water leaking or snow ingestion into the Heater-Vent-Air Conditioning case. Technician is to perform normal water testing diagnostics while the Heater-Vent-Air Conditioning is running, looking for water leaking past the plenum cover. If water is leaking past the cover remove the cover and install a 12x12 snow resistant screen to the fresh air intake. Reseal and install the plenum cover cap using Kent air dry sealer or equivalent.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician when the customer complaint on a noise from the transmission when the engine starts. The noise may be a clunk with a bump sensation. This condition may be caused by turning the engine off and then quickly restarting it. The transmission control module doesn?t have adequate time to power down and the 1-2-7-8-R along with the 1-2-3-4-5-R clutches will apply at maximum line pressure causing this concern. This is considered normal operation if the transmission control module is not allowed to power down before restarting the engine. The transmission control module needs the transmission to be placed in park the ignition turned off and the door opened and closed. After closing the door the transmission control module requires 2 minutes before the engine should be restarted. If the concern is present and duplicated after following the power down procedure the General Motors Technical Assistance Center for further direction.

This Preliminary Information communication provides additional information to the technician when replacing the Duramax Diesel head gasket. This is a supplement to procedure found in Service Information. The left and right cylinder head gaskets are not interchangeable and will block oil and coolant passages if installed incorrectly resulting in severe damage to the engine. Technician is not use any power sanding devices, wire brush or wheel as well as any chemical cleaning agents to clean the gasket surface. Leave the gaskets in the package until the surfaces are ready to install them. Do not set the gaskets on workbenches or tool boxes to avoid introduction of foreign debris. The cylinder head surface is not to be machined measure the head for warpage with a straight edge and feeler gauge replacing the head with warpage in excess of .1 millimeter. All M12 head bolts must be replaced however the M8 bolts can be reused. Install 2 head bolts secured at minimal torque to minimize the chance of introducing foreign material. Use a paint pen on the M12 bolts marking the head of each bolt indicating which of the 4 torque steps have been completed to prevent missing a step or doing a step twice.

The following steps may help to determine if this is caused by a fuel pressure sensor not reading the low end of the pressure range. Technician is to make sure the engine is cold and install the Multiple Diagnostic Interface along with Global Diagnostic System 2. Navigate to fuel system depressurize and at engine idle depressurize the fuel system. The fuel pressure sensor value should drop to 0 and the engine will stall. If a sensor is causing this concern the suspected sensor will not drop to 0 the engine will stall however the sensor will still read 30 to 40 pounds per square inch.

Then run the engine at 1100 revolutions per minute for 45 seconds and record the oil pressure. Then run the engine at 3500 revolutions per minute for 45 seconds and record the oil pressure. Technician will now need to run the engine at 1400 revolutions per minute using Global Diagnostic System 2 command the oil control valve on and off 10 times on the 11th time record the reading on and off. Technician will now need to run the engine at 2500 revolutions per minute using Global Diagnostic System 2 command the oil control valve on and off 10 times on the 11th time record the reading on and off. Also record if any repairs were made previously for this concern. Technician will now call General Motors Technical Assistance Center with the findings of the test.
