This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0442. Technician will need to review Techlink article from May 2013 titled "Using the Evaporative Emissions System Tester" Technician will need to follow these steps to help diagnose the issue. First after the P0442 has been verified do not disturb any of the fuel system components. The technician now can use the scan tool to close the Evaporative Emissions System. If possible change the tank pressure sensor units from inch_H2O to milimeter_Hg for better resolution. Now the vehicle can be stared to monitor the tank pressure sensor output value for approximately two minutes. If the tank pressure sensor value does change, pressurize the fuel tank side of the purge solenoid with the GE 41413-A / J 41413-A and the necessary adaptors. Now add smoke and allow pressure to stabilize for 2 minutes. If smoke is allowed to pass through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid. If the tank pressure sensor value does not change, then install CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid. With the Evaporative Emissions System closed, pressurize the system through the CH-48096 adaptor and allow the system to completely stabilize, by observing the Press / Vac Gauge for a minimum of 5 minutes. Now add smoke to the system with GE 41413-A / J 41413-A after system stabilization. Now inspect the purge solenoid, engine side, fuel cap, canister vent solenoid filter and any line quick connects. When the leak is unable to be located, test under a vacuum condition. his type of leak may be detected by using the scan tool Purge/Seal function to create a vacuum in the Evaporative Emissions System and then observe the FTP sensor parameter for vacuum decay.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that may have an engine oil leak that appeared as they were driving the vehicle in extremely cold ambient temperatures. The technician may find the oil leak is coming from the rear main seal. Technician will need to check for proper thermostat operation by following thermostat Diagnosis as outlined in Service Information and replace the thermostat as necessary. Also the technician will remove the cam cover, inspect the positive crankcase ventilation baffle inside, and replace the cam cover if obvious sludge build up is present. Any debris in the positive crankcase ventilation pipes, hoses, the positive crankcase ventilation nipple on the cam cover, and the throttle body should be cleaned out. Technician should inspect the related positive crankcase ventilation hoses/connections for potential damage and replace if necessary. Run the engine at operating temperature for 15 minutes at idle. Then turn the engine off, and drain the engine oil for at least 15 minutes to remove all oil and condensation or water from the crankcase. Follow Service Information repair procedures to repair any oil leaks that were induced as a result of the frozen positive crankcase ventilation system and excessive crankcase pressure. Technician should insure the Engine Control Module calibrations have been installed to adjust the engine oil life monitor to a maximum of 7,500 miles (12,070 KM) as well.

12313B - Special Coverage (revised warranty information). The chrome layer on the balance chain pins may wear, allowing the chain to stretch. This would cause an engine noise, and if left untreated, could cause the chain to break, leading to engine damage. In addition, the fuel pump plunger shaft seal may wear and allow fuel to leak into the crankcase, setting a P0172 DTC, and illuminating the Malfunction Indicator Light. This can cause engine run-on and/or the engine to run rough. If this condition occurs within the stated terms, dealers will replace the engine balance chain and the fuel pump.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a rattle noise from the rear lift gate on rough roads. Technician will need to inspect the lift gate wedges by opening the lift gate, insert paper between the body side & lift-gate side wedges, and then close the lift gate. If the paper cannot be removed, grease lift-gate side wedges. If the paper can be removed, reset the wedges by loosen lift-gate side wedge center screw to allow center portion to "ratchet" along internal detents freely, pull center adjustment portion of lift-gate side wedges to full downward position, close lift-gate to full latch engagement then use power to close lift-gate system (if available), close manually on non-power lift gates and do not slam, open lift gate, and pull the center adjustment portion down one additional detent & torque screw 5.0 newton meters if wedge adjustment does not have enough travel for the one additional detent add washer under the two lift-gate side wedge attachments to shim as required. Now to inspect the lift gate wedges by opening the lift gate, insert paper between the body side & lift-gate side wedges, and then close the lift gate. If the paper cannot be removed, grease lift-gate side wedges. If the concern is still present adjust lift-gate latch striker.
