SI B36 04 14 Wheels and Tires January 2016 Technical Service. This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI 36 04 14 dated September 2014. SUBJECT: Rolling Tire Noise . INFORMATION: You will find that driving an i3 is very similar to driving the conventional cars and trucks you're used to drive, but turn the "Readiness" ON and you'll immediately notice the silence from the powertrain. Once you'll pull away, you'll notice how quiet the vehicle is. When directly compared to cars with internal combustion engines, ambient conditions such as wind, rain, rolling noises, and possible stone impacts to the under body or axle parts may seem louder. These louder ambient and rolling noises are inherent in the design of the vehicle and are part of normal driving operation. The emitted sound from the tires is a normal characteristic, inherent in the side tread profile and is not a defect of material or workmanship. In the efforts to lessen this characteristic, a new side tread profile has been implemented into the tire design. These newly designed tires are identified from DOT 2314 onwards."

Clicking Noise from Off-board Charger. While the vehicle is charging, the off-board charger is clicking. The clicking noise comes from the relays inside the charger cycling off and on. This condition most commonly occurs when the vehicle is fully charged; it is plugged into the charger; and then pre-conditioning is activated via the BMW iRemote app. The cycling of the relays can last from a few seconds to several minutes. Despite this cycling, the vehicle will continue to charge and pre-condition normally. While this condition can affect any off-board charger brand (Level 1 or 2), the Clipper Creek HCSSeries (Level 2/240V) charger tends to be more susceptible. CAUSE This situation is caused by an EME software issue that allows, depending on the electrical load demand from the vehicle, the charging to cycle on and off excessively.

"Displayed Range Is Lower After Programming. After the vehicle is programmed with ISTA/P 3.53.3 (i-level I001-14-07-503), the displayed vehicle range in the instrument cluster is lower than prior to the software update. The actual range that the vehicle is capable of achieving on a full charge has not changed. The difference between the displayed range and actual range is always conservative, yet this difference varies based on driving profile. When driving primarily at highway speeds, the difference between displayed and actual range is within a few percent of each other. When driving primarily with a low speed/city profile, the gap may widen to as much as 20% or more. Software improvements have been made to the range algorithm to improve its accuracy in all driving scenarios. These updates are available with ISTA/P 3.55.0 (I-level I001-15-03-501). In addition, the following enhancements are integrated into this new I-level: ? The state of charge (SOC) percentage is visible in the upper left corner of the Kombi. It has been added to the board computer display in order for the customer to better manage the vehicle range. ? On vehicles from 3/2015 production, hospitality charging (charger sharing) has been added. This feature will automatically unlock the charge port when the vehicle is fully charged and still plugged in. This feature is not backwards-compatible to vehicles produced prior to 3/2015. ? REx only - if the SOC reaches 2.0% with the REx running, the message ""Low Battery. Power Reduction Possible."" will appear in the Kombi. In addition to the range display, the customer may notice that the vehicle's range has decreased as outside temperatures have gotten colder. This is most noticeable in extreme cold climates, and when preconditioning is not used. This situation does not indicate a problem and is independent of the range display algorithm. "Service Engine Soon (MIL) Lamp Illuminated with No Relevant Faults. INFORMATION If an i3 or i8 is brought in for service with a Service Engine Soon (MIL) lamp illuminated, or with a customer concern that the MIL is intermittently illuminated, troubleshoot with ISTA/D. During diagnosis, refer to the functional description (FUB), Troubleshooting Malfunction Indicator Lamp I01. This document explains the rationale behind what triggers an MIL on an electrified vehicle, as well as some diagnostic hints. If these diagnostics do not lead to a root cause and a solution, continue with the following: ? Do not clear faults with ISTA/D. ? Use the recommended ACTRON OBD scan tool to read out any code (P or U code) that is present. The ACTRON scan tool was sent to BMW centers via the automatic tool shipment program. For more information on this tool, refer to SI B04 18 15. ? Record any and all P/U codes. ? Look up the relevant code[s] in the attached document, SAE_P-Code_List.pdf. This list provides the description for BMW specific P/U codes. ? Match the P/U code[s] to the fault codes stored in the vehicle. Typically the P/U code description is very close to the fault code title. - NOTE: Even though multiple OBD-relevant fault codes may be stored in the vehicle, the P/U code displayed is what triggered the MIL. Therefore, continue diagnostics for the fault code associated with the P/U code displayed. ? If no P/U codes are displayed and ISTA/D diagnostics are inconclusive, submit a TC PuMA case entitled Check Engine Light - No Relevant Faults to either ""BMW i3 Powertrain Components"" or ""i8 Powertrain Components"" for further assistance. -The P code and diagnosis summary should be included in the case."

Drivetrain Malfunction (CCM 794) with Isolation Faults. The Drivetrain Malfunction check control message (CCM 794) is displayed, either while driving or when starting up. The following faults are stored in the vehicle: EME: 22280F and/or 222814 SME: 21F0E3 and/or 21F0E4 When the CCM is present, there are no apparent drivability concerns. After allowing the vehicle to rest and then restart, the CCM typically does not reappear. CAUSE The cause of an isolation fault is generally a resistance between HV+ or HV- and the shield/chassis ground, which is below a predetermined threshold. The following procedure addresses these faults when caused by a defect in the cable between the HV battery and the EME, as well as when excess moisture is present inside the REx eMachine. This moisture condenses and triggers the above-mentioned faults after a long REx runtime followed by rapid cooling.

? During vehicle charging with the doors locked, the charge port is also locked. However, now when charging commences, the charge port will be unlocked to allow for hospitality charging (charger sharing). This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B65 13 12 dated September 2012. designates changes to this revision SUBJECT Headunit High: Navigation System Road Map Usage. INFORMATION The Headunit High (HU-H), also called NBT, began replacing the Car Information Computer (CIC) on certain MY2013 vehicles with option 609. This change will affect the navigation system road map data support process and the warranty spare parts processes for the HU-H. For the US market, all vehicles will come pre-loaded from the factory with the latest navigation system road map database version that was available at the time of vehicle production. Therefore, there will be no physical copy of the navigation system road map data media DVD set or USB stick placed in these vehicles at the Vehicle Distribution Center (VDC). NOTE: Additionally, all replacement HU-H parts come with a pre-loaded version of the current available navigation system road map database installed. A set of DVD copies of the navigation system road map database, HU-H NAVI Road Map North America NEXT, is shipped to all BMW centers through the automatic tool shipment program with each release of a navigation system road map database. IMPORTANT: Additional copies or earlier NAV road map database versions cannot be ordered individually! Therefore, please take special care to archive the HU-H NAV road map DVD sets! The NAV road map data on the DVD set can also be installed into the Network Attached Storage (NAS). From there it then can be installed onto the HU-H in the vehicle, using the Integrated Service Technical Application for Programming (ISTA/P). For installation of the navigation system road map data media DVD set onto the Network Attached Storage (NAS), please contact your ISPI NEXT Administrator. In addition to this procedure, it is also possible to download the NAV road map data on the DVD set directly to the hard disc drive (HDD) integrated in the HU-H by inserting the DVDs one by one into the HU-H internal DVD

Automated Activation of Navigation System During PDI/QC1. INFORMATION Important: The INITIAL NAV enabling code no longer needs to be pre-ordered through the Parts department! When the vehicle is connected to the diagnostic system ISTA to perform PDI/QC1, the step to activate the navigation system (part of Delete Transport Mode) will automatically request the INITIAL NAV enabling code (VIN-specific) without pre-ordering the enabling code. This enabling code will be automatically delivered through ISTA and it then activates the navigation system. Note: This VIN-specific NAV enabling code is then also automatically stored in the Repair Kit in the Aftersales Assistance Portal (ASAP). The automated INITIAL NAV enabling code request and activation of the navigation system will take no longer than 1 minute. After finishing "Delete Transport Mode," the navigation system in the vehicle will be active without entering the 20-digit INITIAL NAV enabling code manually or in ISTA. If the navigation system is not active and asking for the enabling code, turn off the ignition and wait for the head unit to enter sleep mode (approx. 3 minutes). After that, turn on the ignition again. The head unit will start up and the navigation system is activated. If the INITIAL NAV enabling code for first-time activation of the navigation system is not requested or delivered automatically, it still can be ordered manually through the Parts department and activated in the vehicle through the iDrive controller, by entering the 20-digit enabling code manually.

Displayed Range is Lower after Programming. When driving primarily at highway speeds, the differnece between displayed and actual range is within a few percent of each other. When driving primarily with a low speed/city profile, the gap may widen to as much as 20% or more. In addition, the customer may notice that the vehicles range has decreased as outside temperatures have gotten colder. This is most noticeable in extreme cold climates, and when preconditioning is not used. This situation does not indicate a problem and is independent of the range display algorithm. CAUSE The algorithm that determines the displayed range, was changed with the 14-07-503 software level. The result of the changed algorithm is that the display is too conservative.
