In order to reboot the unit, hold down the ?power? and ?eject? buttons at the same time until the unit switches ?OFF?. The instrument cluster illumination is controlled by a photocell inside the cluster. If an illumination concern is suspected, darken the area over the photocell, or use a flashlight to simulate natural light changes, to see how the illumination is affected. See figure 1 below for example of the photocell location based on a 2011 Jetta sedan. Location can change based on model.
