Technical Bulletin (Oil Consumption Measurement): Customer states oil consumption is higher than the Volkswagen oil consumption standard of up to 0.5 quarts per 600 miles, or 0.5 liters per 1000 km. In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified break-in periods consume more oil during the break-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the break-in period. Refer to the Owners Manual for specific break-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, the ambient temperature and road conditions. Further factors include the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue and the oxidation level of the oil. Incorrect torque converter or flywheel/flexplate installation can result in transmission damage. When installing an engine, flywheel or transmission, please follow the installation procedures outlined in ELSA. For the flywheel/flexplate, please be certain the correct shim is installed between it and the crankshaft (reference VWIQ120). When installing a torque converter, press the torque converter hub through the seal as far as the first stop. Turn the torque converter while pushing toward the transmission using light force, until the cut outs in the torque converter hub lock into the pump wheel plate. The torque converter slides in. The torque converter is installed correctly if it is easy to turn by hand and if it fits evenly in the transmission bell housing. Additionally, it should spin freely when the transmission bell housing bolts are torqued to the engine block, prior to installation of the flywheel to converter bolts (reference VWIQ121).

If the steering rack is replaced on the above models for any reason, it is necessary to replace the steering harness as well. The new harness may be equipped with an extra connector. If all connections are made correctly, then it is necessary to remove that connector and tape the exposed wires back into the harness. Be sure to tape tightly in order to provide a water-tight repair.

A new MDI cable (?MDI Adapter Cable ? Lightning Charger?) is now available through the VW Accessories eCatalog that is made for use with iPhone 5 variants as well as the previously mentioned iPad/iPod models. This cable should provide full functionality on any vehicle equipped with a UMI (Unified Multimedia Interface). On MY 13 and older vehicles equipped with an MDI, the software level of the MDI must be at or above SW 240 (see Technical Bulletin 2024337) in order to be fully functional.

To detect which line(s) is inoperative, utilize a volt meter to check for 0 V, which will be present after the open in the grid line. The check must be performed with the engine running and heated rear window switched on. Switch OFF the ignition and visually locate the damage. Proceed with checking any other lines as necessary. Once the damaged line is identified, repair utilizing the Repair kit by Permatex® ITEM 09117.

Install a vacuum gauge on the dipstick tube and check crankcase vacuum at idle. Compare to a known good vehicle. If the vacuum reading is lower than the comparison vehicle, visually inspect for oil leaks between the engine and the transmission. Smoke test the crankcase by connecting the EVAP smoke machine to the dipstick tube and inspect for leaks at the rear main seal (this will limit pressure to 2 PSI). DO NOT apply shop air to the dipstick tube or the crankcase. If a rear main seal leak is identified, replace the seal.

Inspect the water pump for signs of contact with engine oil. Engine oil may cause the water pump gasket to swell, which may lead to a coolant leak. If water pump replacement is necessary, ensure that any engine oil is thoroughly cleaned off, prior to water pump installation. Please note that when replacing the water pump or opening the cooling system, there is a special bleed procedure that has to be performed. Vacuum bleed the cooling system for 10 minutes. Start the engine and let idle until the thermostat opens and the cooling fan runs, before driving vehicle or raising engine RPM.
