This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on the steps to diagnose and repair vehicles that may have Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp on and a constant engine misfire. If Service Information diagnosis isolates no compression on the misfiring cylinder(s) with 100% leakage into the crankcase, perform the following steps as necessary before disassembling the engine. Technician will use a lighted bore scope if available to inspect the top of the related piston(s) through the spark plug hole to determine if any of the pistons are melted. If damaged piston(s) are found inspect for aftermarket parts. Also use the latest version of 09-06-04-026 to verify if there are aftermarket calibrations in the Engine Control Module. Take photos and document accordingly if anything is found.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician that some vehicles may have a Service Engine Soon lamp, engine misfire on cylinder 1, 4, 6, or 7 and/or tick noise. Technician will follow service information diagnosis first. If service information diagnosis does not isolate the cause of this concern perform a cylinder deactivation active fuel management system compression test in service information. If the running compression of the misfiring cylinder stays below 25 Pounds per Square Inch regardless of the active fuel management solenoid being commanded on or off, an active fuel management lifter is mechanically collapsed/stuck or unlocking as soon as the engine is started. Replace all active fuel management lifters, and all plastic lifter guides. Also perform the cylinder deactivation active fuel management Valve Lifter Oil Manifold Diagnosis and Testing in Service Information. If it isolates a concern with the Valve Lifter Oil Manifold, replace it and reevaluate the concern. The active fuel management lifters can also be monitored for proper operation by carefully inspecting the cylinder 1, 4, 6, and 7 rockers and valves while cranking or briefly and safely running the engine with the valve covers removed. If the valve or valves of an active fuel management cylinder stop moving while doing this test, the active fuel management lifter is causing the concern. For 2008-2009 Full Size Truck/SUV or a 2007-2009 Chevrolet Tahoe with the Police Package reprogram the Engine Control Module. On the 2008-2009 Pontiac G8, 2010-2011 Camaro, and 2007-2010 Full Size Trucks with active fuel management, also determine if the active fuel management pressure relief valve shield that is listed in the latest version of 10-06-01-008 has ever been installed. On passenger cars with the LS4 engine, determine if the updated oil pan gasket that is listed in the latest version of 11-06-01-007 has been installed.

Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0300 and or P0301. Technician will need to inspect all of the spark plugs for oil fouling and cracks around the electrode porcelain. Technician will replace the spark plug if it is found cracked. If the #1 spark plug is the only spark plug that is oil fouled and the electrode porcelain is not cracked, inspect the related valve seals to ensure that they are not damaged or missing, and repair as necessary. If the valve seals are fine, inspect the number 1 cam bearing for possible cause of this concern. Replace the bearing if needed. If the cam bearing has spun the engine will need to be replaced.

Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0420 and or P0430 stored. Technician should be advised that the catalytic converter efficiency Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0420 and P0430 are disabled for the first hour of engine run time to allow break-in of the catalytic converter. Technician will need to use a Tech2 to check the verify engine run time on the Engine Hour Meter in the Instrument Panel Cluster Data Display/Data 1 List in the scan tool match. If the engine run time is less than one hour, the battery may have been disconnected, or another vehicle power loss event may have occurred, during vehicle manufacturing. Technician will need to clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and perform a drive cycle. If the catalytic converter was replaced and the Diagnostic Trouble Codes set it may be a result of the engine run time restrictions no longer being in place since the vehicle is no longer new. Technician will find Diagnostic Trouble Code C0696 or C0711 set in Electronic Suspension Control. Technician will need to inspect air compressor assembly for wire damage and repair any damage do not replace the complete air compressor assembly. Some vehicles may have a Service Suspension System message on the Driver Information Center and may also comment that the rear suspension ride height may be low under a heavy payload. Technician will follow published Service Information diagnostics and if determine if the sensor needs to be replaced technician will need to replace a complete air filter, dryer, and sensor assembly. Some vehicles may have a loose hose hanging down in the left rear of the vehicle. Technician will replace the auto leveling compressor air inlet filter and hose assembly. Also some vehicles may have automatic level control compressor is no longer performing a self-test at start up. Be advised the automatic level system normally will not or very infrequently cycle the compressor at key up.
