Emissions Recall Circular (2.0 Liter Gasoline Engine Vehicles Reprogramming of Engine Control Module and Replacement of Malfunctioning Oxygen Sensor): Volkswagen has found that the oxygen sensor in the upper part of the exhaust system could fail under certain conditions, potentially causing a vehicle to exceed Federal and/or California emission standards, or to experience increased fuel consumption. ?Thermal shock? within the sensor caused by moisture accumulation could cause oxygen sensor failure. If the oxygen sensor fails, the vehicle?s "check engine" light on the dashboard will illuminate. The corrective action taken for this issue was to Check the emission control system for proper function, reset electronically the engine?s control module and replace the oxygen sensor, if necessary.

Emissions Service Action Circular (VR6 Engine Update ECM Software for Catalytic Converter Monitoring System): The ECM software for the catalytic converter monitoring system is too sensitive. This can cause the MIL to come on, and some vehicles may exceed Federal and/or California emissions standards. Also, in some cases this leads to unnecessary catalytic converter replacement. The corrective action taken for this issue was to Update ECM software.

Technical Bulletin (Oil Consumption Measurement): Customer states oil consumption is higher than the Volkswagen oil consumption standard of up to 0.5 quarts per 600 miles, or 0.5 liters per 1000 km. In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified break-in periods consume more oil during the break-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the break-in period. This document informs of oil consumption tests to check a vehicles performance.

For concerns of no or intermittent A/C operation where pressure diagnosis does not lead to a cause, be sure to check the N25 A/C clutch coil. The fan control module may send a brief voltage signal to the clutch and then shut it off due to an open or high resistance in the coil circuit. The coil resistance should be between 3.5 and 4.5 ohms. If the reading is high or low when checked at the fan module, be sure to double check right at the coil to rule out any wiring concerns. Additionally, check ground circuit integrity for the clutch coil.
