Dealer Letter: In our continuing efforts to ensure the best in customer satisfaction, Toyota is announcing a Warranty Enhancement Program to extend the warranty coverage for repairs related failure of the Intelligent Power Module (IPM). The vehicles covered under this Warranty Enhancement must first have Safety Recall E0E (launched in mid-February, 2014) performed (if applicable). In these vehicles, Toyota has received some reports where the Intelligent Power Module (IPM) located inside the inverter assembly of the hybrid system may fail. This condition is indicated by hybrid system diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): P0A94, P324E, P3004, and/or P0A1A. If one or more of these DTCs are detected, various warning lamps on the instrument panel will also illuminate and the vehicle will enter fail safe mode. Although the Hybrid Inverter assembly is covered by Toyota?s New Vehicle Limited Warranty for 8 years or 100,000 miles (whichever occurs first), we at Toyota care about the customers? ownership experience. Toyota is now extending the warranty coverage for repairs related to failure of the Intelligent Power Module (IPM).

Tech Tip: Starting with the 2010 Model Year, Toyota began a gradual transition to the use of synthetic 0w20 viscosity engine oil. There are multiple benefits of this oil including: Reduced friction and wear on engine surfaces, Improved fuel economy, Reduction in waste oil stream (in vehicles approved for 10,000 mile oil change intervals), Reduced maintenance cost (in vehicles approved for 10,000 mile oil change intervals). Due to the improved performance and durability of 0w20 synthetic oil, Toyota has extended the oil change intervals to 10,000 mile for most vehicles that require this oil. With this change, the following should be noted: The 2TR-FE (4Runner/Tacoma) and the 3UR-FBE (Flex Fuel Tundra/Sequoia) are the exceptions to this new change interval program; these engines have not been approved for the 10,000 mile interval at this time. A 5,000 mile oil change interval is still required for these vehicles. Also, the Flex Fuel 3UR-FBE requires a 2,500 mile interval when operated on E85 50% of the time or more. Only Toyota vehicles in which 0w20 oil is mandatory (except for the 2TR-FE & 3UR-FBE Engines) have been approved for extended oil change intervals. Vehicles in which 0w-20 is an option to 5w20 (or 5w30) will continue to require 5,000 mile change intervals, even if 0w20 oil is used. In case of vehicles with 10,000 mile oil change intervals, the 5,000 mile service interval has not been eliminated. The traditional 5,000 mile maintenance procedures (such as tire rotation) will continue to be required, and the fluid levels (including engine oil) will need to be checked and adjusted at this time. If the vehicle operation meets the standard criteria for "Special Operating Conditions" such as: driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, making repeated short trips under 32 degrees F, or extensive idling, the engine oil must be replaced at 5,000 mile intervals, regardless of oil used.

Tech Tip: Greenhouse Gas Logic (GHG) has been implemented on Toyota A/C Systems to reduce tailpipe emissions. The Federal government issues CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) credits to vehicle manufacturers that implement new technologies that reduce the carbon footprint of the vehicles they produce. GHG Logic technology works by automatically operating the HVAC system in REC mode when certain conditions are met, improving the A/C system cooling efficiency and reducing the vehicle's CO2 tailpipe emissions.

Toyota vehicles are equipped with either conventional or run-flat tires. Sometimes punctures may occur as a result of contact with road debris or other hazards. If a puncture occurs, it may be possible to repair the tire and return it to service. With a conventional tire it is not possible to drive for an extended amount of time with the tire at low pressures as damage to the tire may occur. With run-flat tires, due to reinforced sidewalls, it is possible to drive for up to 100 miles (160 km) at speeds less than 55 mph (90 km/h) with little or no damage to the tire.

Beginning in 1998, Toyota introduced side airbags as optional equipment. Toyota does NOT recommend replacement of original seat covers with non-Toyota leather or other seat cover materials on vehicles due to the following: Seat covers NOT recommended by Toyota may affect side airbag performance, in general or in part, during an accident. Modifications that negatively affect side airbag performance can result in severe occupant injuries. Seat covers are an integral part of this safety system. Replacing fabric seat covers with non-Toyota leather or other seat cover materials may compromise the effectiveness of this safety system. The design of the seat is complex, integrating safety and strength with comfort and luxury. Toyota strongly discourages modifying original equipment seats that have optional side airbags. Additionally, Toyota strongly advises against the installation or use of aftermarket seat covers, which could impair the performance of the side airbags in the event of an accident.

Customer retention and proper maintenance of vehicles has been a major focus for Toyota. To help remind customers that regular oil changes are essential to the proper maintenance of their vehicle, dealers are required to begin installing a first oil change reminder sticker prior to delivery. By doing this, customers will be reminded to return to your dealership for their first oil change. Your current oil change reminder sticker may be used. (See PDS Check Sheet item 8 of ?Final Inspection & Cleaning.?) A New PDS Check Sheet has been developed for the 2014 model year Prius. Some check points have been added, expanded or clarified.
