Tech Tip: Starting with the 2010 Model Year, Toyota began a gradual transition to the use of synthetic 0w20 viscosity engine oil. There are multiple benefits of this oil including: Reduced friction and wear on engine surfaces, Improved fuel economy, Reduction in waste oil stream (in vehicles approved for 10,000 mile oil change intervals), Reduced maintenance cost (in vehicles approved for 10,000 mile oil change intervals). Due to the improved performance and durability of 0w20 synthetic oil, Toyota has extended the oil change intervals to 10,000 mile for most vehicles that require this oil. With this change, the following should be noted: The 2TR-FE (4Runner/Tacoma) and the 3UR-FBE (Flex Fuel Tundra/Sequoia) are the exceptions to this new change interval program; these engines have not been approved for the 10,000 mile interval at this time. A 5,000 mile oil change interval is still required for these vehicles. Also, the Flex Fuel 3UR-FBE requires a 2,500 mile interval when operated on E85 50% of the time or more. Only Toyota vehicles in which 0w20 oil is mandatory (except for the 2TR-FE & 3UR-FBE Engines) have been approved for extended oil change intervals. Vehicles in which 0w-20 is an option to 5w20 (or 5w30) will continue to require 5,000 mile change intervals, even if 0w20 oil is used. In case of vehicles with 10,000 mile oil change intervals, the 5,000 mile service interval has not been eliminated. The traditional 5,000 mile maintenance procedures (such as tire rotation) will continue to be required, and the fluid levels (including engine oil) will need to be checked and adjusted at this time. If the vehicle operation meets the standard criteria for "Special Operating Conditions" such as: driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, making repeated short trips under 32 degrees F, or extensive idling, the engine oil must be replaced at 5,000 mile intervals, regardless of oil used.

Flash calibration updates for specific vehicle models/ECUs are released as field-fix procedures described in individual Service Bulletins. This bulletin details the Techstream ECU flash reprogramming process and outlines use of the Technical Information System (TIS) and the Calibration Update Wizard (CUW). Flash calibration updates can only be applied to the vehicle/ECU combination for which they are intended. ECUs have internal security that will not allow them to be programmed with another ECU?s information.

Tech Tip: Greenhouse Gas Logic (GHG) has been implemented on Toyota A/C Systems to reduce tailpipe emissions. The Federal government issues CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) credits to vehicle manufacturers that implement new technologies that reduce the carbon footprint of the vehicles they produce. GHG Logic technology works by automatically operating the HVAC system in REC mode when certain conditions are met, improving the A/C system cooling efficiency and reducing the vehicle's CO2 tailpipe emissions.

Tech Tip: Safety Connect is a vehicle option which requires a subscription fee for the system to be active. The first year of service is provided in the vehicle purchase price. Once the subscription has lapsed the DCM will be in an inactive state. In some instances, a DCM may need to be replaced even though the customer is not using the service.

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide a procedure to adjust tire pressure correctly when outside temperature is significantly colder or warmer than shop temperature. Toyota vehicles are equipped with either conventional or run-flat tires. Sometimes punctures may occur as a result of contact with road debris or other hazards. If a puncture occurs, it may be possible to repair the tire and return it to service. With a conventional tire it is not possible to drive for an extended amount of time with the tire at low pressures as damage to the tire may occur. With run-flat tires, due to reinforced sidewalls, it is possible to drive for up to 100 miles (160 km) at speeds less than 55 mph (90 km/h) with little or no damage to the tire.

Occasionally settings in the Data Communication Module (in-vehicle DCM), or on the network may prevent the ?Shelled Mode? status. Beginning in 1998, Toyota introduced side airbags as optional equipment. Toyota does NOT recommend replacement of original seat covers with non-Toyota leather or other seat cover materials on vehicles due to the following: Seat covers NOT recommended by Toyota may affect side airbag performance, in general or in part, during an accident. Modifications that negatively affect side airbag performance can result in severe occupant injuries. Seat covers are an integral part of this safety system. Replacing fabric seat covers with non-Toyota leather or other seat cover materials may compromise the effectiveness of this safety system. The design of the seat is complex, integrating safety and strength with comfort and luxury. Toyota strongly discourages modifying original equipment seats that have optional side airbags. Additionally, Toyota strongly advises against the installation or use of aftermarket seat covers, which could impair the performance of the side airbags in the event of an accident.

Each tire (excluding the spare tire) has a tire pressure warning valve/sensor, and the measured tire pressure data is transmitted to the Tire Pressure Warning System antenna/receiver to the Tire Pressure Warning System ECU. During Pre-Delivery Service (PDS), the tire pressure warning valves/sensors must be activated according to the procedure in this bulletin.

A download and installation process is required to activate the Entune? suite of Apps & Data Services before they are used for the first time on new vehicles. The download and installation process may also need to be performed under other circumstances such as following a head unit replacement or after the customer?s personal settings are erased. The download and installation process requires between 3 and 15 minutes to complete, depending on the file size, cellular connection speed, and other factors.
