This Service Information bulletin announces instruction for application of additional lubrication between the brake caliper support and pad clips. This will prevent the pad from dragging due to corrosion buildup which may result in uneven or premature wear of the replacement brake pads. This additional instruction applies to all models with brake pads using the upper and lower pad clips and has been added to the brake pad installation procedures found in the related Service Manuals.

This Service Information bulletin announces a design change to the clutch release bearing used on the models as listed above. During assembly of the bearing, a different type of grease is used which has a higher resistance to heat. In cases where the operator keeps a foot on the clutch pedal for extended periods, an increased amount of heat is generated which can cause the grease inside the bearing to deteriorate. In a case of prolonged clutch pedal application, seizure of the bearing can occur with potential damage to other related components.

2.5 Liter N/A engine only. REVISED. Subaru of America, Inc. has determined that vehicles affected by this Service Program require ECM reprogramming. A modification to the Engine Control Module software logic has been developed to improve the performance of the emission control system. This software change will not adversely affect fuel economy or performance. This software update is intended to improve vehicle emissions when the vehicle is operated in cold weather and the engine is turned off and restarted within short periods of time such as in several minute intervals. The A/F sensor contains a heating element, which is controlled by the ECM, and which assists the sensor in reaching an optimum temperature, resulting in better accuracy. When the vehicle is operated under the conditions described above, there could be a longer than desired delay in the ECM?s turning on the A/F sensor heating element, resulting in higher than desired emissions. This software enhancement will correct that condition.

NHTSA announced in a press conference today, the planned expansion of the airbag inflator recall to an additional 35 to 40 million vehicles from various manufacturers nationwide. We are currently assessing which of our models may be covered. We hope to make that determination soon. When specific vehicles are identified, owners will be notified plus vehicle identification numbers (VINs) can be researched on Subaru.com or on the NHTSA web site Safercar.gov.

Revised TSB. The Subaru Lock Information Site (SLIS) is located at http://lockinfo.subaru.com, and provides information on how to obtain immobilizer codes and key cut codes for Subaru vehicles from the 2000MY to present. This bulletin identifies the equipment required to initialize (reset) the immobilizer code and cut the key blanks, for both immobilizer and non-immobilizer type keys. Subaru of America began using immobilizer systems in some 2005MY vehicles (please refer to Immobilizer Chart for more detailed information).

THIS BULLETIN PROVIDES PRODUCTION CHANGE, REPAIR PROCEDURE AND PARTS INFORMATION TO ADDRESS A CUSTOMER CONCERN OF A HIGH-PITCHED SOUND COMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION EXTENSION HOUSING AREA. IN COLD TEMPERATURES, THERMAL CONTRACTION CAUSES SHRINKING OF THE TRANSMISSION CASE. IN HIGH TEMPERATURES, EXPANSION OF THE CASE OCCURS. THESE TEMPERATURE CHANGES AFFECT THE AMOUNT OF PRELOAD ON THE TRANSFER DRIVEN SHAFT BEARINGS. IN SOME RARE CASES, WHEN PRELOAD IS VERY NEAR THE LIMIT OF SPECIFICATION COMBINED WITH UNUSUAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, THIS THERMALLY-INDUCED PRE-LOAD CHANGE MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE BEARINGS AND RESULT IN THE SOUND HEARD BY THE CUSTOMER. A CHANGE HAS BEEN MADE TO THE EXTENSION CASE AND A NEW “DISH PLATE” ADDED. THE MACHINING DEPTH OF THE EXTENSION CASE HAS BEEN INCREASED TO ACCOMMODATE THE NEW DISH PLATE. WHEN USED ALONG WITH A SELECTIVE THRUST WASHER, THE SPRING TENSION OF THE DISH PLATE HELPS TO MAINTAIN A CONSISTENT AMOUNT OF PRE-LOAD ON THESE BEARINGS THROUGHOUT VARYING TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS.
