Lithium - ion Battery

NHTSA communication ID: 11034255

NHTSA source summary · Original PDF not reviewed by Recallfolio

*****Dealer Announcement***** Nissan is committed to delivering the highest levels of product quality and customer satisfaction. In support of this commitment, Nissan is implementing a Lithium-ion Battery Post-Remedy Program for certain Model Year 2019–2022 Nissan LEAF vehicles that were previously remedied under voluntary safety recall campaigns R24B2 and R25C8. As a reminder, campaigns R24B2 and R25C8 addressed a potential risk of battery fire that could occur during Level 3 (CHAdeMO) Quick Charging. The remedy involved a software update designed to improve battery State-of-Charge (SOC) fluctuation detection. In rare cases, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) associated with SOC fluctuation may be detected after the remedy has been performed and the vehicle returned to the customer. To provide additional customer assurance regarding the long-term effectiveness of the remedy, Nissan is offering a Post-Remedy Program. Under this program, if a SOC fluctuation-related DTC is confirmed within twelve (12) months from the date the remedy software update was completed, the customer will be eligible for further support. Upon dealer diagnosis and confirmation of the applicable SOC fluctuation DTC: • Nissan will arrange for Lithium-ion battery replacement free of charge, or • If a replacement battery is not available, Nissan will initiate the process to offer vehicle repurchase at an amount exceeding the Kelley Blue Book (KBB) Private Party value. The above available remedy is available for all MY19-22 LEAFs regardless of mileage and whether the Lithium-Ion Battery Coverage under the New Electric Vehicle Limited Warranty is still in effect. Dealers must follow standard diagnostic procedures to confirm the condition prior to escalation. Once confirmed, Nissan will provide directions on next steps, including coordination of battery replacement or initiation of the repurchase process. *

*****Dealer Announcement***** Nissan is conducting a service campaign on certain specific MY2018-2025 Nissan LEAF vehicles identified in Service Comm and National Service History – Open Campaigns. On affected vehicles, at temperatures below -10°C/14°F, use of the blower motor at full speed can cause the defrost function to operate at a low electrical current and trigger failsafe logic. This may result in reduced defrost performance. Dealers will update the HVAC control software. *****What Dealers Should Do***** 1. Verify if vehicles are affected by this service campaign using Service Comm or DBS National Service History – Open Campaigns I.D. P4A17 • New vehicles in dealer inventory can also be identified using DBS (Sales-> Vehicle Inventory, and filter by Open Campaign).  Refer to NPSB 15-460 for additional information • Please continue to check newly arriving inventory for campaign applicability. 2. If a retailed vehicle affected by this Campaign ID visits the dealer for service, the dealer should inform the customer about the service campaign and communicate that the updated software is available. 3. Once remedied, dealers should submit the applicable warranty claim for the action performed so it can be closed in Service Comm and release the vehicle to the customer.

VOLUNTARY SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN 2018-2022 LEAF; REAR CAMERA CAMPAIGN ID #: R23D7 APPLIED VEHICLES: 2018-2022 LEAF (ZE1) Check Service COMM or Dealer Business Systems (DBS) National Service History to confirm campaign eligibility. INTRODUCTION Nissan is conducting this voluntary safety recall campaign on certain specific model year 2018-2022 LEAF vehicles to inspect the rear camera operation and either add support to the rear camera harness or, if necessary, replace the rear camera. This service will be performed at no charge to the customer for parts or labor. IDENTIFICATION NUMBER Nissan has assigned identification number R23D7 to this campaign. This number must appear on all communication and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign. DEALER RESPONSIBILITY It is the dealer’s responsibility to check Service COMM or Dealer Business Systems (DBS) National Service History for the campaign status on each vehicle falling within the range of this voluntary safety recall which for any reason enters the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist) owners and vehicles in a dealer’s inventory. Federal law requires that new vehicles in dealer inventory which are the subject of a safety recall must be corrected prior to sale. Failure to do so can result in civil penalties by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While federal law applies only to new vehicles, Nissan strongly encourages dealers to correct any used vehicles in their inventory before they are retailed.

12 VOLT BATTERY TESTING FOR IN-SERVICE VEHICLES SERVICE INFORMATION The following Service Information lists NNA procedural recommendations for establishing good connections while performing 12V battery testing. These recommendations are expected to promote uniformity during the connection process, therefore reducing the number of incorrect “Test with DCA” and “Replace” results. HINT: If 12 volt batteries are allowed to discharge for a prolonged period of time, battery life may be drastically reduced. This condition may lead to premature battery replacement and customer dissatisfaction. IMPORTANT:  CPX-900 is now an accepted testing tool to use along with or in place of the DSS-5000  CPX-900 operating instructions are found at: https://nissancpx900.midtronics.com/  DSS-5000 operating instructions are found at: https://nissandss5000.midtronics.com/  DCA-8000 is now a required testing tool to be used for all warranty replacement decisions. The DCA-8000 is also a more efficient charger than previously available, and will charge any available 12 volt lead acid battery safely and accurately as long as all precautions and inputs are made correctly. PREVENT FRONT AXLE THREAD DAMAGE DURING NUT REMOVAL SERVICE INFORMATION If an Applied Vehicle needs to have a front axle nut removed, for any reason, the staking of the nut into the axle keyway must first be removed. The essential tool (part number # J-52982, Figure 1) required to remove the nut staking, is called out as a “Cape Chisel” in the Electronic Service Manual (ESM), and must be used to prevent thread damage to the axle (see Figure 2 on page 2).  The Cape Chisel arrived at dealers in December of 2020.  Damaged threads, due to improper removal of the stake placed in the nut, will not be covered by warranty. For information on using the Cape Chisel, refer to the Electronic Service Manual (ESM): Section TRANSMISSION & DRIVELINE > FRONT AXLE > REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION > FRONT DRIVE SHAFT > LH/RH.
