Some vehicles equipped with electric parking brake (EPB) may exhibit a grinding noise from the rear brakes when braking. This may be caused by the rear brake pads not having the capability to remove the rust from the rear brake discs. The red rust accumulated on the discs is exposed to high temperatures during braking, and consequently the rust turns black. As the black rust is too hard to be removed by the brake pads, the rust progress is accelerated, resulting in the grinding noise.

Some CX-5 customers may find that the liftgate does not close when pressing the power liftgate (PLG) rear switch (A) located on the interior liftgate trim. This may be caused by PLG switch corrosion. Water from condensation may drip onto the switch connector and cause corrosion. To eliminate this concern, the PLG rear switch has been modified with a waterproof connector. Some Mazda3 customers may complain that the vehicle door locking system does not work when the door lock switch on the liftgate interior trim is pressed. DTC B11C4:23 (BCM - liftgate lock switch circuit malfunction) may be stored. This may be caused during a high pressure car washer. Water may enter through the rear center brand emblem base component and drip onto the switch connector causing corrosion. NOTE: The rusted connector may also cause a battery drain. To eliminate this concern, the rear center brand emblem base has been modified to prevent from water entry.

Some customers may experience the airbag warning light ON with DTC B00A0:09 stored in the SAS control module memory when the battery voltage is low. DTC B00A0:09 (Occupant classification sensor internal signal output unstable). This concern is caused by the low voltage detection time of the occupant classification sensor (OCS) being too short during cranking, which causes detection of the DTC unnecessarily. The concern occurs more often in colder weather when greater electric current is consumed to start the vehicle. To eliminate this concern, the OCS has been modified to avoid unnecessary DTC detection.

A musty/mildew type odor may come from the vents when the air conditioning (A/C) system is operating. It is most noticeable when the A/C is first turned ON. This odor is the result of mold growth in the A/C evaporator/cooling unit which is caused by condensation, dust, and pollen within the cooling unit. This condition is usually worse during high humidity conditions. “Mazda Air Cooling Coil Coating” is available to encapsulate the mold to reduce odors. If the product is properly applied, it can effectively reduce the musty/mildew odor for up to three years.

MULTI-MODEL - MAZDA MOBILE START CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM. As shared previously, due to planned industry-wide changes in mobile network infrastructure and wireless technology, the Mazda Mobile Start (MMS) accessory was no longer offered beginning with 20MYvehicles. These technology changes are scheduled to occur in late 2021 as our service provider transitions away from a 3G network which currently supports the MMS application and its vehicle operations for all active legacy accounts. As a result, the MMS application and its vehicle operations will no longer work after September 30. 2021 for these legacy accounts and their respective vehicle owners. In an effort to provide advance notice and be transparent, and also to lessen the inconvenience of this situation - On 11/12/2020, all active MMS account holders will be informed of this news and will be presented with their choice of one of following goodwill offers: A new, replacement remote-engine start system (key fob transmitter type), Installation of Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, A $1000 voucher towards the purchase or lease of a new Mazda vehicle

Some vehicles may exhibit that the SBS/SCBS warning light (amber) turns ON right after the engine is started with DTC U0420:68 [FSC] stored in memory.  DTC U0420:68 [Forward sensing camera (FSC)]: Error signal received from electric power steering (EPS) control module. For Mazda6 and CX-5, the following error messages may appear in the instrument cluster.  Front camera sensor system malfunction  Forward Smart City Brake Support Malfunction  Driver attention alert system malfunction. This may be caused by the battery voltage falling and the EPS control module failing the initial learning for the steering center position while cranking. The FSC detects the error notified by the EPS control module. To correct this concern, the control software of the EPS control module has been modified while the repair procedure modifies the FSC for earlier repairs in the market.

If you encounter any type of electrical concern (e.g, dead battery, engine no start, DTC(s) stored...), interview the customer before proceeding with normal Workshop Manual diagnosis. Aftermarket devices may be the cause of the electrical concern. Ask the customer if any aftermarket devices have been installed. Below are a couple of examples of unusual electrical concerns caused by aftermarket devices.

When replacing manual or automatic transmission, make sure to remove the plug from the old transmission (as shown below) and then re-install it to the new transmission with a new washer. The new transmissions (including remanufactured A/T) have a shipping plug, as shown in the figures (M/T: black, rubber made; A/T: pink and black, with breather). This plug is for shipping use only and needs to be removed in order to re-install the original plug from the old transmission.

Some customers may experience the airbag warning light ON with DTC B00A0:09 stored in the SAS control module memory when the battery voltage is low.  DTC B00A0:09 (Occupant classification sensor internal signal output unstable). NOTE:  Even if the voltage is recovered after the engine is started, the airbag warning light stays ON during the drive cycle.  When the battery voltage becomes stable after the engine is started, the airbag system will operate normally.

Some vehicles may experience an engine no start/no crank with either of the following DTC's stored: P0615:12 - Starter relay circuit malfunction B112A:12 - IG2 relay circuit malfunction. This may be caused by water contamination/corrosion at electrical connector C-04 due to: Windshield tint installation: Windshield tint installed to block UV light. The water used during the installation of the tint may run down behind the dashboard. Carefully inspect the windshield to see if window tint has been installed or not. Some window tint film appears clear and is for UV light only. Windshield repair/replacement: Poor windshield sealing during installation can cause an internal water leak. Water may run down behind the dashboard.
