This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have Diagnostic Trouble Code P00C6 and/or P228C set. Technician will need to inspect the terminals at the Engine Control Module for fit and tension as well as the crimp to wire connection. Terminals to inspect in the ECM are connector x2 terminals 3, 18, and 19 for the fuel rail pressure sensor. Also connector x3 terminals 16 and 32 for the high pressure fuel pump.

Technician will inspect the oil control solenoids for metal debris. Also inspect for damage to the cam caps Journals and camshaft journals on the heads. The check the timing chain idler sprockets for stiffness when turning. If any of these instances would be a cause to replace the engine instead of repair.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that may have a short, sharp rattle noise from the front of the engine at start up. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0011 P0014 P0016 or P0017. Technician will need to inspect the engine belt. If the vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic power steering, technician will need to verify the power steering pulley outer edge is aligned flush with shaft and repair as needed. If pulley alignment is correct or vehicle does not have hydraulic steering, replace the engine belt. If the noise is still present and it is coming from the cam actuators they will need to be replaced.

The concern is present when coasting at low speeds of less than 15 miles per hour and then aggressively applying the throttle, or after making a hard stop followed by an aggressive throttle. This is considered normal operation of the vehicle the throttle is delayed and opened slowly up to .7 seconds to help minimize driveline lash and clunking or will have approximately .5 seconds of zero torque to allow the transmission to shift to first gear.
