CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALL EQUIPPED WITH A 10.5" REAR AXLE, MAY HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH THE REAR AXLE RIGHT-HAND SIDE BEARING ADJUSTER CLIP AND BOLT MAY COME LOOSE WITHIN THE REAR AXLE. IF THIS OCCURS, A GRINDING NOISE AND A VEHICLE VIBRATION WOULD BE NOTICEABLE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. IF THE ADJUSTOR OR BOLT PUNCTURES THE DIFFERENTIAL COVER PAN, A FLUID LEAK COULD DEVELOP. IF ENOUGH FLUID WERE TO LEAK OUT, THE DRIVER MAY HEAR INCREASING NOISE, ADDITIONAL VEHICLE VIBRATION, AND SMELL BURNT AXLE LUBRICANT. IF THE DRIVER IGNORES THESE WARNINGS AND CONTINUES TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, A SLOW LOSS OF VEHICLE MOTION COULD OCCUR. DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPAIR THE REAR AXLE.

Refinishing Aluminum Wheels This bulletin updates General Motor's position on refinishing aluminum wheels. GM does not endorse any repairs that involve welding, bending, straightening o re-machining. Only cosmetic refinishing of the wheel's coatings, using recommended procedures, is allowed. Evaluating Damage In evaluating damage, it is the GM Dealer's responsibility to inspect the wheel for corrosion, scrapes, gouges, etc. The Dealer must insure that such damage is not deeper than what can be sanded or polished off. The wheel must be inspected for cracks. If cracks are found, discard the wheel. Any wheels with bent rim flanges must not be repaired or refinished. Wheels that have been refinished by an outside company must be returned to the same vehicle. The Dealer must record the wheel ID stamp or the cast date on the wheel in order to assure this requirement. Refer to Refinisher's Responsibility Outside Company later in this bulletin.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have an OnStar system that will not power up. Technician should turn off the ignition and cancel retained accessory power. After the vehicle has powered down, remove power to the OnStar module for five minutes. After the power has been removed for five minutes, if the OnStar system is working release the vehicle. If the OnStar system is still inoperative continue with published Service Information diagnostics. Technician may need to contact General Motors Technical Assistance Center depending on the STID, Station ID, or OnStar Customer Identifier.
