Dealers are to: Replace block heater element with a revised heater equipped with EPDM O-Rings, shorter bolt and improved torque & angle. Disconnect the coolant heater from being powered whenever ?shore power? is plugged in. Add a label to the current cord, ?Avoid continuous use, for Cold Start Only?, unless the cord is damaged at either end, then replace the original cord. Provide the customer with an Owner?s Manual Insert found at the end of this bulletin.

This Preliminary Information communication provides additional information to the technician when replacing the Duramax Diesel head gasket. This is a supplement to procedure found in Service Information. The left and right cylinder head gaskets are not interchangeable and will block oil and coolant passages if installed incorrectly resulting in severe damage to the engine. Technician is not use any power sanding devices, wire brush or wheel as well as any chemical cleaning agents to clean the gasket surface. Leave the gaskets in the package until the surfaces are ready to install them. Do not set the gaskets on workbenches or tool boxes to avoid introduction of foreign debris. The cylinder head surface is not to be machined measure the head for warpage with a straight edge and feeler gauge replacing the head with warpage in excess of .1 millimeter. All M12 head bolts must be replaced however the M8 bolts can be reused. Install 2 head bolts secured at minimal torque to minimize the chance of introducing foreign material. Use a paint pen on the M12 bolts marking the head of each bolt indicating which of the 4 torque steps have been completed to prevent missing a step or doing a step twice.

When using a scan tool if the oil pressure is low but the oil pressure at the oil filter housing is correct, technician should inspect the Valve Lifter Oil Filter for debris/sludge that could be restricting oil flow to the oil pressure sensor. Technician should remove the Valve Lifter Oil Filter and clean it. If the Valve Lifter Oil Filter cannot be cleaned replace it.

REPLACE ALL ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT LIFTERS, AND ALL PLASTIC LIFTER GUIDES. THIS LOSS OF FLUID OCCURS NEAR THE TRANSMISSION COOLER AT THE CRIMP JOINTS ON THE METAL ENDS OF THE COOLER LINE WHERE IT JOINS THE RUBBER HOSE. THE INCREASED OIL COOLING CIRCUIT PRESSURE IS EXPERIENCED DURING VEHICLE OPERATION AT EXTREME LOW OUTDOOR TEMPERATURES. IF CONDITION OCCURS WITHIN STATED SPECIAL COVERAGE TERMS, THE COOLER LINES WILL BE REPLACED

Technician should first access the rear of the inner wheelhouse area through the tail lamp cavity and the front of the wheelhouse from under the vehicle, and coat the inner hem of the wheel house to side outer panel with 3M Rust Fighter I. After allowing the 3M Rust Fighter I to dry then apply several coats of Nox Rust X-121B undercoating Part number 12346501.
