This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on how to diagnose and repair vehicles that may have an OnStar Turn-By-Turn Navigation the system that is inoperative. Technician verifies there are no Diagnostic Trouble Codes are present in the Antilock Braking System and Vehicle Communication Interface Module of the vehicle. If no Diagnostic Trouble Codes found call OnStar using the Blue button on the OnStar key pad and ask the advisor for a turn by turn route. Also make a OnStar personal call and a call into the vehicle. If normal diagnostics do not lead to a resolution technician will need to call General Motors Technical Assistance Center for further assistance.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician with the axel setup information from American Axle Manufacturing. Technician should be advised that the maximum pinion shim to be used or stacked behind the pinion is 0.050?, and the minimum pinion shim is 0.020? for an 8.6 axle. The range for available pinion depth shims for the 10.5? axle is 0.006? to 0.024?. When setting the backlash it should be set between 0.003? to 0.005? on a new ring and pinion for any American Axle Manufacturing application. The ring and pinion can be reused or adjusted if the mileage is less than 500 miles, if not used for towing. Technician should be advised that a ?roller coaster? or ?hourglass? pattern on the bearings may be normal up to 10,000 miles and possibly longer. With a mis-machined housing you may get a heel pattern on both sides of the gear teeth at build up can generally be corrected with backlash adjustments. When setting up an 8.6? axle with a 5 cut gear set is to use a 0.035? pinion shim and set backlash to 0.004?. When using the newer 2 cut gear set also use a 0.035? pinion shim and still set backlash to 0.004?. To set the gear pattern use backlash to adjust the pattern heel to toe. Use the pinion shim to adjust the height of the pattern. The proper drive pinion bearing pre-load is from 15 - 30 inch pounds with new bearings. The total torque to turn after the differential case is installed should increase 5 - 10 inch pounds at the pinion. A new pinion nut must be used whenever the old one is removed. The axle shaft end play specification is 0.012? per side and the radial specification is 0.002? - 0.003?. Technician should be advised that synthetic lube can be used in all new American Axle Manufacturing axle assemblies. The new pinion seal for the 8.6? axle assembly is a two piece design.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that the power lift gate Regular Production Option Code (E61 or TB5) is inoperative. Technician will find Diagnostic Trouble Code B153A set in the power lift gate control module. Technician will need to perform these steps. 1. Disconnect the connector at the Lift gate Latch Assembly. 2. Install a 3 ampere fused jumper wire between each signal circuit and the ground circuit. 3. If either test fails, check the wiring for the signal circuits, low reference circuit, or try a power lift gate control module from a known good vehicle. 4. If both tests pass, monitor the internal switch inputs in the lift gate latch assembly for proper operation. 5. If one of the internal lift gate latch assembly switch inputs are not reading correctly in one of the positions above and the vehicles passes test both test, replace the Lift Gate Latch Assembly.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician with additional vehicle speed sensor diagnostic information. Technician may encounter multiple issues when diagnosing a Vehicle Speed Sensor. Technician will find it difficult to follow the speed signal path between the components. To test connect the Fluke meter leads between circuits 821 and 822 and set the meter to Alternating current voltage and then press the hertz button. When the Engine Control Module showing correct miles per hour in the data list however it is setting a Diagnostic Trouble Code for the Vehicle Speed Sensor. To test connect the Fluke meter red lead to circuit 6399 and the black lead to ground, then set the meter to Direct current voltage and press the hertz button. The Instrument Panel Cluster speedo will work correctly when the Engine Control Module or Antilock Braking System Diagnostic Trouble Codes are for the Vehicle Speed Sensor. To test connect the Fluke meter red lead to circuit 1827 and the black lead to ground, then set the meter to Direct current voltage and press the hertz button. When the Antilock Braking System Malfunction Indicator Lamp on with Electronic Brake Control Module Diagnostic Trouble Code C0055 and no other customer complaints, to test connect the Fluke meter red lead to circuit 817 and the black lead to ground, then set the meter to Direct current voltage and press the hertz button.

Technician should understand the power cycles of the various OnStar systems. All Generation 6, 7, 8, and 9 systems are powered up continuously for 48 hours from ignition off. After 120 hours from ignition off, these systems then completely power off. The Onstar modules draw: * IGN ON - 240 to 400 Milliamp. * IGN OFF - 3 to 20 Milliamp for 48 hours or 120 hours on Gen 9 and vehicle communication platforms. * IGN OFF - 0.2 to 0.8 Milliamp after 48 hours or 120 hours on Gen 9 and vehicle communication platforms.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a lack of power on initial acceleration from a stop when the ambient temperature is approximately 103 Fahrenheit or greater and may include engine detonation or pre-ignition type events as temperatures approach 120 Fahrenheit. Technician will need to perform published Service Information diagnosis first. If Service Information diagnosis does not isolate the cause of this concern, take a Tech 2 snapshot of the concern happening and note the Spark Parameter in the Ignition Data List. If it drops near/below 0 degrees during the concern, check if there is a cylinder that shows any knock. If there is a knock in any cylinder perform a top engine clean. If the concern is still present, then switching to premium fuel (91 octane or higher) with detergents (Top tier fuel) when ambient temperatures exceed 110 Fahrenheit degrees, this should provide a slight improvement in engine performance when ambient temperatures are high especially as temperatures approach 120 Fahrenheit degrees.
